I read in an article from New Ceramics (March-April 2026) on ‘Bonsai Fascination’ by Eddie Curtis, that porcelain slip can ‘aggressively’ crack under heat. After speaking with Cath, she also recommended I tried Parian slip too. I applied the slip to some very quickly built forms and tried to spin them out on the wheel with the slip applied. I ended up pushing them out with my fingers as throwing them didn’t work out. Next time, i’ll apply them without purposely cracking the slip and see if the kiln cracks the slip in the firing process. I used a stick to apply the engobe as it created an unintentional shape of mark. I used the green, black, red/brown engobe. I also used a glaze pencil to create contrasting thicknesses of lines and depth. I was given white craft crank, original craft crank and a black clay coloured with manganese oxide. I just created some simple pinch pots to get a feel of each clay. I enjoyed the level of grog in the original craft crank. When interviewing Craig Underhill, I learnt that he used engobes a lot in his work. They’re very similar to underglaze, however just carry abit more thickness and slip-like qualities. I made a white, yellow, red, green, ‘red-brown’, and black engobe. Interestingly, the red/brown engobe went shinny in the firing. Underneath these test tiles are white slip (56 & 55) and a grogged terracotta slip (2&3). It’s nice how the engobe cracked on the grogged slip and the vibrancy increased on the white slip. I was testing out the types of marks I could create when carving away at the slip on wet clay. However, I’d say they don’t look like the glazes in the book for two reasons- I used Cobalt Carb oppose to Cobalt Oxide because I couldn’t access the oxide at the point of creating these glazes. Another reason is that I didn’t specify the firing temp for the oxidation fired tiles. These ones shown in the image were fired at 1280’c- but after firing I noticed in the book it said to fire at a high temp oxidation firing. I’m not sure what temp the oxidation firing can reach but perhaps if it went higher than 1280’c the results would have been more similar to the book. I frayed and pulled out the edges of the slab and added a smoothed slab in the middle to create a contrast of texture and form. The piece has an organic shape, allowing the slab to dictate the final movements of the vessel. The texture was applied to the collaged slabs before application. I enjoyed the 3D effect they had, standing out from the surface, creating depth and shadow. The slabs were also torn at the edges, creating a cohesiveness throughout the piece. Initially, I was unsure about the free-hand knife drawing I did on the back slab. Black in the exterior background, white in the interior and blobs on the front and then blue on the slab wrapped around the front of the piece. The blue slip was the beginning of me exploring colour within my work. I want to create visual contrast yet create a harmonic piece were all the elements work in tandem. I feel like colour can achieve this visual contrast, alongside the textural elements. It helped decide on my glaze choice and what areas to leave exposed and what to cover. In the end- I decided to fire it in reduction and use some of the results from my test tiles on this piece. In the cracks and fine line drawing, I soaked in copper ox to help amplify the details, washed it back multiple times and re-applied to create a layered depth. Inside the piece, I used brown/red engobe and drew some marks using a stick. This creates a result with little control over the outcome. I then used Test Tile 9 (Base glaze recipe C from the Potters Palette book with cobalt carb 0.5% and Titanium 5%) This was applied on some of the collaged slabs. I used thin layers to help keep the integrity of texture. Around the blue slab, I applied transparent glaze, as in reduction, it turns a grey/blue colour. This was just applied on the edges to enhance the shine and 3D appearance. I applied Test Tile 22 on the inside texture details. This was base glaze C with 1.5% copper ox and 3% vanadium pentoxide. However, at a passing glace, they stuck with me. After CAL, I found myself re-visiting her work. I found her delicate and frail appearance of her drawings really interesting and I wanted to figure out how she did it. In one of her pictures, she’s seen using a needle. I believe, she carves into the work over the top of an applied glaze, or literally uses the needle to apply a stain or oxide. High-fired reduction. This piece was built by literally punching out a halved block of clay with a thick piece of square wood. A clay strip was added, with some wire cutting on the surface. The firing temperature worked well in reduction but also showed some nice results in the oxidation firing.
