It’s fragmented pieces of textured slab, pieced together, to create an informal style vessel. When discussing this piece with Micaela, she suggested to add more texture on the slabs that were plain, especially round the back. It was also evident where the base was connected so she said bring the texture right down to the bottom so help blend it to the piece. She then applies a layer to a piece of newspaper and uses a fine tool, like a needle to draw over the top, which presses that area onto the bisqueware. I used some bisque test tiles and tried printing onto the back of them, as the front has textured parts. Before getting my hands on Linseed oil for Becca Brown’s recipe, I created a recipe using Manganese oxide, China clay and water. This dried very quickly once applied to newspaper, and then I slightly dampened the tile surface, then laid the inky newsprint on top. I used a sharp, fine tool to start tracing what was on the newspaper. I was actually quite pleased with the results. I didn’t expect it to really work, I imagined just a inky blob. I then applied some transparent glaze to two of them to see if the ink would burn away or bleed into the glaze. As you can see, it did burn away with the glaze applied over the top in areas. I did some gridded marks and lines drawings. This was inspired from some images from ‘The Everyday’ post on my Inspiration page. This form was created using two slabs, only connected once at the back, even the base isn’t connected. Therefore, the wire gives the illusion of providing a sense of structural integrity. I wove the wire together and pushed it through the clay to secure it in place. It provided an alternative way to creating a form, adding in movement and fragility to the piece. I threw slate ash at the porcelain slip when it was still wet and pushed larger pieces into the form. When fired, this will present a balance between the two inclusions. The clay held it’s textured imprints and the grog content definitely heightens the materiality of the piece. On the interior I used Test Tile 23 (Base Glaze C, Manganese 2% and Rutile 5%) Below- Red Underglaze and Test Tile 23 again on inside and grogged surface on outside. This piece survived the bisque firing with no cracks, but then in reduction, it cracked. The transparent glaze also burnt away in the firing, leaving a burnt clay colour and little amounts of oxide. The form also warped and, really, I wasn’t too thrilled with the form originally. I was using a sketch as a direct reference, which removed the process of intuition when making. The red underglaze was the first time I used colour this bold, and in some ways, it works. I also liked the grogged surface. All that remained was the black engobe, which does not compliment the iron rich colour. The Blue slip also dramatically faded. I was able to pinch up the sides and apply an interior piece across. I used the grey stoneware clay for this. I also used just base glaze C on it’s own on the interior then waited for it to dry. Once dry, I carved into it and applied copper carb oxide into the carvings. In this scenario, I applied too much oxide and it bled out and create harsh black marks. In some areas there’s some interesting results, like where it’s gone blue and crystalised. I also applied a very thick layer of white slip for the bisque firing so that may have enhance the results of the oxide. On the exterior, I applied Test Tile 22 (Base Glaze C with Copper oxide 1.5% and Vanadium Pentoxide at 3%) and that came out as expected actually. After reading ‘Sculptural Vessels Across the Great Divide’ in Ceramic Reader on Pg 73, it made me consider the purpose of the traditional ceramic vessel form and inherently, I wanted to make something against this idea of a traditional vessel. I begam with a slab with an open top and added a base- a vessel. However, I then decided I’d like to conceal the vessel form with slabs made of holes, so there’s still exposure to the inside, just not functional. I then cut a hole in the side and pierced three holes in the side also. Is this still a vessel? Potentially not, as it can’t contain anything. However, it was simply a piece that reflected my ongoing thoughts around this topic as it had been brought up in tutorials also. Overall though, the form turned out rather wonky and not so visually balanced. The base disrupts from the original shape of the slab, perhaps it’s too big for the top of the form. On the other hand, the glaze turned out exactly as I had imagined, so therefore this is why I don’t entirely dislike this piece. He free climbs Yosemite in the USA and this piece was compared to a rock face, and since my main source of inspiration derives from rock faces and texture, I thought the name was quite fitting, and it has a nice ring to it. In this piece I used- Manganese oxide wash in cracks Black slip on the interior and transparent glaze Test Tile 26- Made with Base Glaze C, 0.25% of Cobalt Carb and Vanadium Pentoxide 3%- (See the technical page for the glaze spreadsheet) I also carved into the glaze after application to create small circles and lines to add depth and used a glaze pencil in areas too. This piece in classed as a success for multiple reasons- I believe this became a real turning point within my practice. The hole in the middle was created with a kiln shelf and it provides an effective visual factor, pushing the two slabs together. The small details, the lines and carving, also add layers and depth. The glaze recipe worked well too and created a complimentary colour that works with the slip. The form is distinctive and simple. On this piece I used Craft Crank Clay- which is a very groggy, stoneware, iron rich clay I also used- Copper Carb wash in the cracks White slip ‘splodged’ on Black slip on one-side Mono-printed with an Manganese ink I made Transparent glaze with slate ash Overall, I wasn’t sure on this piece when I saw it outside of the kiln. However, with time and after photographing professionally, I found it grew on me and quite enjoy the application of some the glazes and slips. The white slip loosens up the piece, where as the black adds the order. The monoprint areas are visually discreet but noticeable. Then the slate ash glaze reacted really well and bubbled exactly as anticipated. I read in an article from New Ceramics (March-April 2026) on ‘Bonsai Fascination’ by Eddie Curtis, that porcelain slip can ‘aggressively’ crack under heat. After speaking with Cath, she also recommended I tried Parian slip too. I applied the slip to some very quickly built forms and tried to spin them out on the wheel with the slip applied. I ended up pushing them out with my fingers as throwing them didn’t work out. Next time, i’ll apply them without purposely cracking the slip and see if the kiln cracks the slip in the firing process. I used a stick to apply the engobe as it created an unintentional shape of mark. I used the green, black, red/brown engobe. When interviewing Craig Underhill, I learnt that he used engobes a lot in his work. They’re very similar to underglaze, however just carry abit more thickness and slip-like qualities. I made a white, yellow, red, green, ‘red-brown’, and black engobe. Interestingly, the red/brown engobe went shinny in the firing. Underneath these test tiles are white slip (56 & 55) and a grogged terracotta slip (2&3). It’s nice how the engobe cracked on the grogged slip and the vibrancy increased on the white slip. I was testing out the types of marks I could create when carving away at the slip on wet clay. However, I’d say they don’t look like the glazes in the book for two reasons- I used Cobalt Carb oppose to Cobalt Oxide because I couldn’t access the oxide at the point of creating these glazes. Another reason is that I didn’t specify the firing temp for the oxidation fired tiles. These ones shown in the image were fired at 1280’c- but after firing I noticed in the book it said to fire at a high temp oxidation firing. I’m not sure what temp the oxidation firing can reach but perhaps if it went higher than 1280’c the results would have been more similar to the book. When translating the qualities of the original drawing into a clay form, I find it can be helpful to simplify areas to really see the form. I frayed and pulled out the edges of the slab and added a smoothed slab in the middle to create a contrast of texture and form. I added grog on the outside and allowed the exterior slab to fold over into the centre of the piece. The piece has an organic shape, allowing the slab to dictate the final movements of the vessel. The texture was applied to the collaged slabs before application. I enjoyed the 3D effect they had, standing out from the surface, creating depth and shadow. The slabs were also torn at the edges, creating a cohesiveness throughout the piece. Initially, I was unsure about the free-hand knife drawing I did on the back slab. Black in the exterior background, white in the interior and blobs on the front and then blue on the slab wrapped around the front of the piece. The blue slip was the beginning of me exploring colour within my work. I want to create visual contrast yet create a harmonic piece were all the elements work in tandem. I feel like colour can achieve this visual contrast, alongside the textural elements. It helped decide on my glaze choice and what areas to leave exposed and what to cover. In the end- I decided to fire it in reduction and use some of the results from my test tiles on this piece. In the cracks and fine line drawing, I soaked in copper ox to help amplify the details, washed it back multiple times and re-applied to create a layered depth. Inside the piece, I used brown/red engobe and drew some marks using a stick. This creates a result with little control over the outcome. I then used Test Tile 9 (Base glaze recipe C from the Potters Palette book with cobalt carb 0.5% and Titanium 5%) This was applied on some of the collaged slabs. I used thin layers to help keep the integrity of texture. Around the blue slab, I applied transparent glaze, as in reduction, it turns a grey/blue colour. This was just applied on the edges to enhance the shine and 3D appearance. I applied Test Tile 22 on the inside texture details. This was base glaze C with 1.5% copper ox and 3% vanadium pentoxide. However, at a passing glace, they stuck with me. After CAL, I found myself re-visiting her work. I found her delicate and frail appearance of her drawings really interesting and I wanted to figure out how she did it. In one of her pictures, she’s seen using a needle. I believe, she carves into the work over the top of an applied glaze, or literally uses the needle to apply a stain or oxide. The simple, yet statement energetic gestures is what I love most. The idea behind the ‘Formless’ is that I could create forms that don’t typically fit into a category as such. This would of been a great exercise to do earlier on in the year as I had a small area of topics I was exploring and could have helped develop some ideas sooner. The firing temperature worked well in reduction but also showed some nice results in the oxidation firing.
