Potters Palette Book
The Potters Palette Book by Christine Constant & Steve Ogden
This book help create the initial start point to a more in depth exploration of glazes. Previously I had only been using oxides, the pre-mixed glazes in the studio or the odd recipe here and there. This book has allowed me to methodically develop my knowledge on glazes, whilst slowing exploring a more in-depth approach to deciding what glazes id like to move forward with.
Recipe Base Glaze C
I decided to use this base glaze as it seemed like a good middle ground compared to the other base glazes. The firing temperature worked well in reduction but also showed some nice results in the oxidation firing.
I used this with the addition of oxides and transparent glaze to add a glossy finish to some areas of my pieces
Development
Going into the next half of the semester (May 2026) I want to develop a range of these glazes that include a small % of ingredient changes.
Base Glaze C on Work
This has copper carb oxide and the base glaze C in an oxidation firing- the base glaze maintains the chalky whiteness as it’s not been fired at the desired temperature but adds a nice contrast between the oxide and the base glaze.
I also added transparent glaze in areas to add a glossy finish
Base C in reduction
However, this was base glaze C in the reduction with the same oxide, Copper Carb. The chalky white disappears and you can see the oxides bleed into the glaze
I also discovered it’s a very drippy glaze at reduction temperature so it did stick to the kiln shelf.
Some one’s I’ve noted down to develop-
Pg 19- Copper Oxide 1.5%, Vanadium Pentoxide 3% in Reduction
Pg 25- Cobalt Oxide 0.25%, Vanadium Pentoxide 3% x1 in Reduction x1 in Oxidation
Pg 25- Cobalt Oxide 0.25%, Ilmenite 3% x1 in Reduction x1 in Oxidation
Pg 39- 0.5% Cobalt, 5% Titanium, in Reduction
Pg 37- Manganese dioxide 2%, Rutile 5% in Reduction
Pg 39- Manganese dioxide 1%, 5% Titanium in Reduction
Pg 53- 6% Vanadium Pentoxide in Reduction
Pg 55- Vanadium Pentoxide 5%, Cobalt Oxide 0.12% in Oxidation
Pg 55- Vanadium Pentoxide 5%, Ilmenite 3% in Oxidation
Pg 65- Ilmenite 6% x1 in Reduction x1 in Oxidation
Need to create 1.5kg of Base Glaze C to explore these on 13 test tiles in 100g portion sized pots
