Establishing Form from the ‘Stick Drawing’ Series
This was the outcome of the drawing’s to the right- I used a piece of kiln shelf to push through the form and create texture bleeding from the middle. The process of making also flowed in its own way. I added slabbed details and reacted intuitively to the clay in that moment.
The drawing to the left is the one I used for inspiration for the piece in the former on the right. I initially wanted the shaded areas carved out but I did implement these marks as holes in the piece.
This drawing was a simplified version of the drawing on pink paper. When translating the qualities of the original drawing into a clay form, I find it can be helpful to simplify areas to really see the form. This resulted in the piece to the left.
I created a piece in a dish-like former. I frayed and pulled out the edges of the slab and added a smoothed slab in the middle to create a contrast of texture and form. I added grog on the outside and allowed the exterior slab to fold over into the centre of the piece. This added some fluidity to the work and again, intuition took over in the making process.
Applied black & white slip to both pieces to create a base when thinking about glaze application. Also adds an element of depth.
