Having Another Go at Throwing
Whilst our pieces were firing in the kiln, we had some time to explore some other areas of interest within ceramics. I decided to have another go at throwing as I’m determined to be an all-rounder when it comes to ceramics, I want to be able to do it all. Therefore, I just let the wheel and the clay guide me as I’m not that confident yet when it comes to deciding what sort of shape I want to make… the clay can just decide that!
Here’s how it went…
This double bowl style one just happened off the whim and I really liked it, however when I trimmed it off the wheel, I cut it too fine and it was practically base-less!
I created this bowl using a plaster former and then added a base on the bottom
My thrown pieces on the shelf awaiting to go into the kiln- I added handles on a few to create my first ever mugs!
I took a creative approach to these- I painted on some line work with copper oxide and then coated them in white gloss, I hoped the copper oxide would bleed into the white gloss ( As a test tile had indicated it would do this) However, it did not. See the final results on my homepage!
A few bowl / mug forms
I did actually intend to do this plate! I’m happy with the outcome, I like the thin and shallow rim
I created a pinch pot plate and a pinch pot bowl and then added a base on both- almost creating a set of three with the former bowl.
My pinch pot set and a few more thrown pieces
I coated the mugs in a copper red glaze once fired- they were fired to stoneware temp
I used a pre-mix gloss made up by Cath, our technician. It came out as a lovely speckled, neutral beige. However, I applied the gloss too thick and it melted onto the kiln shelf. Therefore, I lost all these plates and bowls shown in this image
I did save the plaster former bowl and the small pinch pot bowl, however we got the angle grinder to the bottom of them and they were not up to standard so I can’t really do anything with them, other than document! It’s all a learning curve…
