Special Effect Glazes

Linda Bloomfield’s ‘Special Effect Glazes’ book was incredibly helpful when trying to develop some textured, experimental glazes. Please see my blog post on the results of the special effect glazes that I used from this book.

These are the recipes that I used-

Pg 128

Barium turquoise volcanic glaze- 1250’c cone 8

Apply black/undercoat ( This is the recipe for the undercoat)

Feldspar 27 (Potash)

Quartz 32 (Flint)

Whiting 21

China Clay 10

Red Iron Oxide 10

Cobalt 1

Pg 128

Magnesium Matt Grey Crater Glaze 1250’c cone 8

Now apply this glaze over the black/brown undercoat recipe

Potash Feldspar 33

Talc 21

Flint 16

China Clay 15

Whiting 12

Zinc Oxide 3

Titanium Dioxide 5

Silicon Carbide 2 (Don’t sieve out)

My issue that I later found out was that the two test tiles that ‘didn’t work’ were the undercoat recipes and I actually had to combine the two recipes together to get the desired result

Pg 121

Lichen glaze cone 8 1250’c

Nepheline Syenite 50

Light Magnesium Carbonate 40

Standard Borax frit 10

Copper Oxide 1

Pg 121

Lichen glaze 1 over satin matt grey (The undercoat glaze)

Potash Feldspar 33

Talc 21

Whiting 12

Flint 16

China Clay 15

Zinc Oxide 3

Nickel Oxide 1
